Play styles
| Play style | What it changes |
|---|---|
| Survival | The game as designed: the default. |
| Relaxed | Forgiving: no death from hunger, cold or the dark, less damage taken, the portal always revives, fewer hounds and no wildfires. |
| Endless | The world never resets: the portal always revives and resources grow back. |
| Wilderness | Players spawn scattered, resources grow back, and a death means a new character rather than a ghost. |
| Lights Out | Endless night. |
Each play style is one of the game's presets plus a handful of settings, the same as the Host Game screen. Changing it on an existing world changes those settings at the next restart; the map stays.
World settings and world generation
World settings (season lengths, creatures, regrowth, events, giants) are re-applied every time the server starts, so a change reaches the existing world on the next restart: measured, hound attacks moved from None to More on a world already made. World generation options (world size, biomes, how much of each resource) are used only when a world is made.
On Flux
The World Settings tab lists every option of the game build the server runs, read from the server itself (190 for the surface and 86 for the Caves in build 756039), with the game's own names and choices, the surface and the Caves apart. Saving restarts the server. Regenerate World makes a new world for both, with the generation options you set; it cannot be undone, so download a backup first.
Frequently asked questions
Can I change Don't Starve Together world settings after the world is made?
World settings, yes: they apply on the next restart. World generation options only apply to a new world.
What is worldgenoverride.lua?
The file a dedicated server reads for a world's preset and options, one per world. The game rewrites it after each save with the world's own values.
