Factorio Dedicated Server Requirements

A Factorio server starts small and grows with the factory: every belt, inserter, train and biter is simulated on it, sixty times a second. Below are the figures the Flux plans are built on.

Memory

Measured on a fresh map with Space Age (Factorio 2.0.77): about 320 MB in use. It grows with the factory and the explored map, and big mod packs add to it; a late-game megabase is what the 8 GB plan is for.

CPU and UPS

Factorio runs its simulation 60 times a second (UPS), and every player's game keeps pace with the server. When the factory gets too big for the server's CPU, the whole game slows for everyone. Fast cores matter more than many.

Tip:No plan limits players: Factorio's max_players is 0, unlimited, unless you set one.

Version

A player joins only a server running exactly their version. Steam keeps players on the stable release, so a server should run stable too: the one on Flux does by default, and follows each new stable release by itself. A group on Steam's experimental beta can move it to the experimental branch on the Game Version tab.

Ports

  • UDP 34197 by default for the game.
  • TCP 27015 by default for RCON, if you use it.

Frequently asked questions

How much RAM does a Factorio server need?

Little to start: about 320 MB for a fresh Space Age map. Plan 2 GB for a new factory, 4 GB for a growing base or Space Age's planets, and 8 GB for a megabase or a big mod pack.

What ports does a Factorio server use?

UDP 34197 for the game, and TCP 27015 for RCON if it is enabled.

Why can my friends not join with a different version?

Factorio requires the server and every player to run exactly the same version. Run the server on the stable release, which is what Steam installs.
