How to Compare Any Terraria Host
There is no price table on this page, deliberately. Game hosts reprice constantly and any figure quoted here would be wrong within a quarter — and wrong in a way you could check in one click. What does not go stale is what to compare, so that is what this page is.
The five things worth checking
Are backups included, and how many generations?
A Terraria world is a single .wld file, so backups are not a nicety — they are the only thing standing between a corrupted save and starting over. Ask whether they are automatic, how often, how many are kept, and whether you can download them yourself. "Backups available" sometimes means "you can copy the file manually".
Is TShock installed, and who keeps it in step?
This is the criterion with no equivalent in most games and the one most likely to separate hosts. TShock is built against a specific Terraria release and ships days after it, so every game update opens a window where the two disagree and nobody can join. Ask who closes it. A host that installs TShock once and leaves it is handing you the recurring work while charging for managed hosting.
How do plugins get installed?
Every host will say plugins are supported. What differs is the work: whether the ServerPlugins folder is in a file browser or something you reach over SFTP, and whether it survives a restart. A plugin folder outside the persisted volume is the failure people discover after their first restart — along with TShock's SQLite file, which holds every account, permission and ban you have set.
How many machines hold your world?
On most hosts, one. That is normal and usually fine, but it means the answer to "what happens when that disk fails" is entirely down to their backup regime. Ask where the world lives and what the recovery story is, rather than assuming redundancy that is not advertised.
Per slot, or per resource?
A slot number is easy to compare and easy to over-trust: on most hosts it is a cap they enforce, here it is sizing guidance, and on neither does it tell you what the tier is made of. See below.
Slot counts are the easy half of the question
Most game hosts sell tiers by player count. In Terraria that number is enforceable — unlike most survival games, the engine imposes no ceiling of its own, so a host can pass the tier’s figure to the server as-maxplayersand the server will turn the next person away. Worth knowing which of the two you are buying: we strip that flag, so a server deployed here has no limit at all and the number on the tier is what its hardware runs comfortably.
The trap is treating it as the whole answer. What strains a Terraria server is not mainly the headcount — memory grows with how much has been BUILT and how far the map has been EXPLORED, whether anyone is online or not. A duo on a large world they have been mining through for a year can work a server harder than a full group on a world generated this morning.
So compare on both. Take the slot count at face value, then ask what memory and what world size sit behind that tier — and treat reluctance to answer as an answer.
The migration question nobody asks
Ask how you would leave, before you arrive. For Terraria the honest answer should be trivially easy: the world is one.wldfile, and a host that gives you file access has given you everything.
Unlike most games there is no database dump, no licence key and no server identity bound to the provider, so there is genuinely nothing to lock you in.
