Team Fortress 2 Dedicated Server Requirements

A TF2 server is light on memory and needs one fast CPU core more than many slow ones. These are the figures we measured on the 64-bit server.

Memory and CPU

The 64-bit server idles at about 700 MB on ctf_2fort with SourceMod loaded. Players, bots, plugins and big custom maps add to it. The game's simulation runs on one thread at 66 ticks a second, so a fast core matters more than core count.

Up to 3216 v 16 with SourceMod plugins4 GB2.5 vCores

Disk

The server is about 15 GB once installed, with all 238 official maps. Custom and Workshop maps, plugins and logs come on top. Fast local storage matters: the server reads the game's files at every map change.

Network

  • One port, 27015 by default: UDP for the game and the Steam query, TCP for RCON when you turn it on (it is off without an RCON password).
  • About 30 to 60 KB/s per player at the default rates.
  • A Game Server Login Token (App ID 440) to be listed in the server browser.
