Hytale Server Settings Explained

A Hytale server keeps its settings in one file, config.json, at the top of the server folder. Here are the ones most owners change, and the one rule that saves you from an edit that undoes itself.

The settings

SettingKey in config.jsonDefault
Server nameServerNameHytale Server
Message of the dayMOTDempty

Invite only (whitelist)RequireJoinPermissionfalse

Edit it with the server stopped

The server reads config.json only when it starts, and it saves its own config when it shuts down, including anything changed from the console. So the safe order is: stop the server, edit, start it. On Flux the Server Settings tab does exactly that for you.

Admins, bans and the whitelist

From the server console: /op add <player> makes an operator, /ban and /unban take a name or UUID, and /whitelist add <player> lets a player into an invite-only server. Bans are kept in bans.json and permissions in permissions.json, beside config.json. On Flux the Server Console tab has a button for each.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the Hytale server config file?

config.json, at the top of the server folder, beside the Server directory and Assets.zip.

Why did my Hytale server setting not change?

The server reads config.json only when it starts: restart it after editing, and make the edit with the server stopped so a console change saved on shutdown cannot meet it.

How do I make my Hytale server invite-only?

Set RequireJoinPermission to true and add players with /whitelist add <player>.
