Game modes
A mode is a pair of console variables, game_type and game_mode, which the Game Mode tab sets for you.
| Mode | game_type / game_mode | Players | What it is |
|---|---|---|---|
| Competitive | 0 / 1 | 5 v 5 | Bomb defusal, a buy menu and an economy, 24 rounds. |
| Casual | 0 / 0 | Up to 10 a side | Relaxed rules, shorter rounds, no friendly fire. |
| Wingman | 0 / 2 | 2 v 2 | Small bomb-defusal matches on one site, 16 rounds. |
| Deathmatch | 1 / 2 | Free for all | Instant respawn: warm-up and aim practice. |
| Arms Race | 1 / 0 | Free for all | Every kill gives the next weapon. |
Switching mode on a running server needs a map change to start it: the tab does both and moves the players onto the new map. A mode switched this way lasts until the server restarts; the mode it starts in is Game Mode in Deployment Settings.
Settings
The Server Settings tab has 34 settings in six groups: rounds (round time, freeze time, rounds per match, overtime, warmup, bomb timer), economy (buy time, starting and maximum money, cash awards), rules (friendly fire, team balance, respawns, camera, gravity, infinite ammo), bots, voice and chat, and the server (votes, cheats, pause, hibernation, region).
- A setting you leave alone is the game mode's own, so casual, competitive and wingman keep their own round time and money. Set one and it wins over the mode.
- Each value is checked before it is saved, written at once and applied to the running server, with no restart. Round and economy rules start with the next round or match.
- The server name, password, player limit and Steam token are in Deployment Settings instead.
Frequently asked questions
How do I change the game mode?
Open the Game Mode tab, pick a mode and a map, and press Switch now. To keep a mode across restarts, set Game Mode in Deployment Settings.
Why does a setting not change the round I am in?
Round time, money and similar rules are read when a round or match starts, so they apply from the next one.
