The Forest Server Saves and Your Co-op Save

The dedicated server plays one of five save slots at a time. It saves on a timer and when the last player leaves, not when it is stopped, which shapes how you restart it.

When the world is saved

  • Every serverAutoSaveInterval minutes while players are on: 15 by default, and 15 is the least the game allows.
  • Once, when the last player leaves.
  • Not when the server is stopped or restarted. Whatever happened since the last save is lost if you stop it with players on.
  • An admin can also save by hand with /save <slot> in the game's chat.

That is why restarts on Flux that the server does for you, the daily one and the ones for game updates, wait for an empty server: the world has just been saved.

The five slots

Each slot is a folder, Slot1 to Slot5, under Multiplayer in the save folder. The server plays the one named by the slot setting. A slot with nothing in it makes a new world when the server starts on it, so starting a new world is "empty a slot and play it".

Moving your co-op save to the server

  1. On the host's PC, close the game, then open AppData\LocalLow\SKS\TheForest\<SteamID>\Multiplayer.
  2. Zip the Slot folder you want (Slot1, for example).
  3. In the Save Slots tab, upload the zip into an empty slot, then press Play on that slot.
Tip:Each player's own inventory and progress may stay with the co-op game.

Frequently asked questions

Is my world saved when the server restarts?

Not by the restart itself: The Forest saves on its timer and when the last player leaves. The restarts the server schedules wait for an empty server for that reason.

How many worlds can I keep?

Five, one per save slot, and you can download any of them.
