Things worth knowing
- The server reads the file only when it starts, so a change needs a restart.
- The difficulty is chosen when a world is made. A world keeps the difficulty it was made with: to play another, start a new world in another save slot.
- serverAutoSaveInterval cannot go under 15 minutes: the game raises a smaller value to 15.
- The ports and the save folder are not settings you choose on Flux: the deployment sets them to the ports it publishes.
On Flux
The Server Settings tab of the dashboard is a form for all of this, with the defaults beside each field and presets for the rules: no enemies, enemies only at night, full weapon damage between players. Saving restarts the server, which applies the file.
Frequently asked questions
How often does The Forest server save?
Every 15 minutes by default while players are on (the game does not allow less), and once when the last player leaves. It does not save when it is stopped.
Can I change the difficulty of an existing world?
No. A world keeps the difficulty it was made with. Start a new world in another save slot to play another.
