The Forest Server Not Showing Up

A server that is running but not joinable has a short list of causes. Check them in this order.

  1. Wait until the server says running. It takes about a minute to load the world after it starts, a little longer the first time.
  2. Check the version. After a game update the server has to catch up, and a server behind the game refuses the new client. A server on Flux checks Steam every 30 minutes and restarts onto the new build once it is empty.
  3. Check the password. A wrong join password is refused with "Incorrect server password".
  4. Self-hosting: open UDP 8766, 27015 and 27016 and forward them. The query port (27016) is what the server list asks.
  5. Try the Steam favourites route: add the address with the query port in Steam's server browser.
Tip:The server list can take a minute to show a new server. If it is full (the Max Players setting), the game refuses the join with "Server is full".

Frequently asked questions

My server is running but nobody can join. Why?

The usual causes are a version mismatch after a game update, a wrong password, a full server, or, when self-hosting, the UDP ports not forwarded.
